Singapore information
According to the Rough Guide, Singapore is known as "fine city". Smoking in public places and jaywalking are just a few of the ways you can incur a hefty penalty. Familiarise yourself with the city rules as a $1000 fine for littering would not be a good start to a business trip.
Changi International Airport is only 16km from the city centre. A trip in a cab will take you about 20 minutes. Tipping is actively discouraged though in taxis your fare might get rounded up.
Make any appointments in advance, always be punctual and make sure you carry an ample supply of business cards. These should be given and received with two hands. Always examine any cards that you have been handed as a mark of respect to the person who has given it to you.
Although developing relationships is an important part of any business trip, personal information or emotions are not discussed in a business setting. An inquiry into the health of your host or colleague's family will suffice.
Tom Hall from the Lonely Planet emphasises the importance of modesty and patience when doing business in Singapore. "Following your hosts lead on getting to the point are good tactics to follow" he advises. Be careful not to directly contradict your Singaporean host or colleagues and never lose your temper in a meeting. This would be seen as highly disrespectful.
Business attire is more relaxed in Singapore than in other Asian cities. Men don't tend to wear a tie to the office, though if you are dining out in a smart restaurant, you will probably be expected to have one on.
