Sydney information

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales and is instantly identifiable by its world famous opera house. The international airport is Sydney Kingsford Smith, which is about 8km from the Central Business District. There are frequent bus and taxi services leaving from the airport.

Australians are known for being a relaxed nation of people and according to Russell Mills from Tourism New South Wales, "Sydneysiders generally epitomise the friendliness for which Australians are famous." Even in business situations, they will use first names right from the offset.

Don't be fooled into thinking that doing business in Sydney simply requires turning up in your shorts and spending a few days on the beach however. A suit should always be worn and make sure you make your appointments in advance.

Australians like to conduct business in a straightforward manner. Not beating around the bush goes down well. Business cards are used frequently so make sure you have plenty of those.

Many business deals are done over drinks. If it's your round, or meal, don't forget that restaurants are the one place where tipping is appreciated.

Pack suntan cream. This is essential. Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Even if you are just walking from meeting to meeting, make sure you use a cream with a SPF of at least 15.

Finally, drink plenty of water throughout your stay. Dehydration is another danger when in a country with high temperatures and humidity.
