If you’re a premium business traveller, you’re likely to land at and depart from London Heathrow, the world’s busiest international airport. The airport has four terminals – with a fifth, the size of Hyde Park, due to open in March 2008.
Three tips for a stress-free time at LHR. First, remember to check carefully which terminal you’re flying from before you arrive – particularly given that T4 is a long way from T1, 2 and 3. Secondly, arrive in plenty of time – unless you’re Gordon Brown or Paul McCartney, expect long queues. Thirdly, make sure you can use an airline lounge (with a business class ticket or frequent flyer status); the departure gate standard cheese-grater seats are utterly hideous yet, in contrast, LHR has some of the very best premium lounges in the world. There are four ways to reach the city from Heathrow - taxi (black cab), rail (Heathrow Express), tube or (heaven forbid) bus.
The tube (metro/underground/subway) is horrendously slow but cheap. The Heathrow Express is fast but expensive and it leaves you at Paddington; not ideal for east or south London frankly. A black cab is even more expensive and more than somewhat dependent on the vagaries of London traffic; but it’s reliable, very comfortable and able to use the specially designated motorway fast lane. If you’re on company expenses, it’s irrefutably the way forward…
